Trauma-Informed Pedagogy In Music Education

Wednesday, March 22, 2023

Trauma-informed pedagogy is an innovative practice in education that must be implemented into music education. The misconception of trauma-informed pedagogy is the belief that trauma must be actively discussed in the classroom. Although trauma is an inevitable part of the human experience that should be discussed in appropriate settings, music educators can implement subtle ways to address trauma in the classroom, including: the creation of a nurturing environment, using a student-centered pedagogical approach, promoting human connection, appropriately contextualizing music, and emphasizing the musical process over product. The following session proposal provides practical implications for music educators who seek ways to implement trauma-informed pedagogy into their music classrooms.

Presented by the Kennedy Center School and Community Programs Department.

Presenter: Ramon Cardenas
