Mentor Office Hour: To Disclose or Not to Disclose: Requesting Accommodations

March 14, 2024 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. ET

It can be tough to begin or further a career in the arts—and even tougher if you have a disability. That’s why we created the Access/VSA Mentorship Program, to give Network members direct access to professional visual and performing artists with disabilities who can offer advice, make connections, and act as role models. Our mentors answer questions and help guide art careers during regular online gatherings.

Mario Gómez (he/him/él) is a Non-Profit Leader, Consultant, Multi-Hyphenated Theater Practitioner, and Educator currently based in Southern New England. With a 15-year career spanning the intersections of Technology, Community Engagement, and the Arts, Mario has supported organizations, projects, and individuals succeed in an equitable and accessible way.

This office hours theme: How should we consider whether or not to disclose a disability since it is not always safe to do so? How can we request accommodations or advocate for ourselves or others, especially if we do not have institutional power?
